Flight City: St. Louis Takes to the Air

Adventure, vision, innovation and competition were the driving forces behind St. Louis’ role as an aviation hub in the 20th century. Flight City: St. Louis Takes to the Air explores the history of flight in the moments when hot air balloons, airships and planes first soared over our city; when aviators thrilled the public with daredevil displays; when new entrepreneurs launches enterprise to meet growing demands; and when St. Louis itself rose to meet the future of flight.

NEA Jazz Master Ahmad Jamal, 8:00pm
8:00 PM-11:00 PM (1616 E. 18th St., Kansas City, Missouri 64108 - 816-474-8463)
Celebrated master pianist Ahmad Jamal’s innovative minimalist approach, outstanding technical command and identifiable sound earned him the nation’s highest honor in jazz in 1994, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Fellowship. As a major influence on two jazz giants, his version of “Pavanne” provided the basis for Miles Davis’ legendary “So What” and John Coltrane’s “Impressions” – years before either had composed their respective pieces.
His 1958 classic, Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing: But Not for Me, became a left-field smash, remaining on the Ten Best-Selling pop charts – amazingly for a jazz album – for an unprecedented 108 weeks. Although a chamber-like sensibility and a classical formality permeate much of his playing, he swings like a jazzman without fail.
